| Running a BookDrive! at your church, office or school can be fun and easy. The one or two weeks that you set aside for the project will make an impact on the classrooms we serve for years to come. To get started, all you have to do is follow these four easy steps!
For more details on running a BookDrive!, please consult our BookDrive! Guidebook.
1. Plan
- Fill out the BooksFirst! Web Form
by clicking here!
- Find someone to be the main contact person for the BookDrive!
- Determine the time and location
- Gather boxes and other necessary materials
2. Host
- Advertise -- Get the word out by making posters, putting up flyers, and sending letters and e-mails.
- Run the BookDrive! -- Set up your donation boxes and watch them fill up!
- Fundraise -- Since BooksFirst! is a completely volunteer-run organization, we need your help to cover the cost of shipping. We’ve found that people are willing to donate money in addition to books, whether it’s spare change or a more substantial donation. More strategies for fundraising can be found in our BookDrive! Guidebook. (click on the link to the right to download)
3. Sort, Box, and Ship
- Sort the books as best you can by grade level (more guidance for sorting can be found in the guidebook).
- While sorting, check for quality by screening for books that are in bad shape.
- Count how many boxes and books you have, and e-mail us with that information! That way we’ll know what to expect and can track your donation accordingly.
- Ship your boxes with the funds you collected to one of the following addresses:
If you're located on the West coast:
If you're located in the Pacific West region and would like to ship your books to our San Diego chapter, please contact samantha.thomas@booksfirst.org
If you're located on the East coast:
If you're located in the Mid-Atlantic region and would like to ship your books to our Pennsylvania chapter, please contact jessica.moore@booksfirst.org
4. Celebrate!
- Send a press release to your local newspaper to tell everyone about the success you had! (We’ll send you a sample template that you can use.)
- Send us your success story so that we can include it in our newsletter!
- PARTY! Reward yourself and everyone else who contributed to this great cause!
